The Army Corps of Engineers is holding another meeting this morning to address residents’ concerns about possible flooding from the opening of the Morganza Spillway. The meeting will be held at the Morgan City High School multi-purpose building.

The Morganza Spillway is set to open Sunday. Dr. Gary Kinsland, Geology Professor at UL, says the opening of the Morganza Spillway “will affect the economy, specifically farmers, in the path of the Morganza’s floodways.”

All public levees in St. Martin Parish have been closed off to traffic. Officials say there will be no driving, riding, or hauling on top of levees. Only residents traveling to and from their properties will be allowed access.

SLEMCO says if the flood water reaches the company’s electrical equipment, it will shut off power in areas near the opening of the Morganza Spillway.

Ville Platte city government is proposing an increase in sewer, water and garbage collection rates. The mayor says the increase is needed to help sustain the department and services.

Mcdonald’s of Acadiana joins the Adopt a Stop initiative where the company puts a shelter over three bus stops in Lafayette. Council woman Liz Hebert says uncovered bus stops “subject riders to harsh weather conditions.”

The lead singer of a local band is taking the stage against domestic violence.The Three-Thirty-Seven band and Grouse Room is hosting an awareness event in dedication to Faith House on June 14th.

An 8th grader from Youngsville has advanced to round three of the preliminaries for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Only 50 top scorers will make it to the finals.
