An Opelousas man is behind bars accused of murdering his mother.
Deputies say they received a call from a woman saying someone had died at 141 Ranch Road. When they arrived, the found the suspect, Cody Arceneaux, curled up on the floor holding his hands in a bloody towel.
Deputies say the suspect told them his mother tried to stab him and he stabbed her. Authorities localed a large kitchen knife covered in blood and the body of Vickie Granger on the kitchen floor.
Arceneaux was transported to a local hospital for treatment of lacerations on his hands. Upon his release from the hospital, he was transported to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Complex for questioning. After his rights were read, Arceneaux told detectives that he and his mother had been arguing. Arceneaux was armed with a knife when his mother grabbed the knife from him and unintentionally cut him at the base of his fingers. Arceneaux then stated he grabbed the knife from her and began stabbing his mother multiple times anywhere he could.
A neighbor who has known Granger for at least 10 years, Mona Leger, said, “It’s not the same coming out here knowing that she’s not gonna be there no more. We all love her. My kids love her.”
Leger said Cody Arceneaux, Granger’s son, would’ve never intentionally killed his mom.
“He would’ve never intentionally done that to her. He did have some mental issues and I think it was drug-induced but I know he loved her with all his heart and she loved him and she knew he was struggling with them issues and she was trying to help him with them. We all tried to help him,” added Leger.
Alvin Bergeron, another neighbor, said, “She was a hard-working woman…always out in her yard, decorating her yard. She decorated her yard. She fixed that place up nice. She’s going to be missed very much.”
“She was a loving woman. She had a big heart. She had a heart of gold. She would help anybody. She was very kind. She would never turn anybody away. If you needed help she was the woman who you could go to and she would help you no matter what,” explained Leger.
