The St. Landry Parish Schools System will spend between $985,000 and $1.25 million for a new cafeteria at Leonville Elementary.
The school board approved a preliminary cost estimate Thursday.
The district also will spend $11,487 to repair the existing cafeteria.
Assistant Superintendent Joseph Cassimere says state health officials are dissatisfied with the condition of the existing cafeteria and demanded immediate improvements.
Food Director Lucretia Chancler says there are holes in the floor in the kitchen area.
Architect Donald D’Avy says while the school’s 630 students will use the current cafeteria during the upcoming school year, a new cafeteria will be built on campus and should be ready for 2016-17.
D’Acy says cost projections include site demolition of the old building, drainage improvements, additional restrooms and design.
