A man was shot and killed two weeks ago in Eunice as he was getting ready to go to work. Now, Eunice residents, who are also law enforcement officials, have come up with a way to keep each other informed about what’s happening in their neighborhood.
They’ve decided to open up communication between citizens to talk about their safety concerns online through a Facebook group called ‘Eunice Community Watch’.
“It’s good information for the community. Where people can see what’s going on in the neighborhood, post it, alert others so they can be alert and know what ‘s going on. It’s a good tool for that,” said Fontenot.
He tells News 10 he encourages Eunice citizens to share their concerns on the closed page, but he wants people to know it shouldn’t be used as a place to report to police.
“We need to know from you what’s going on. We don’t have somebody monitoring Facebook and these sites 24/7. So if you see something going on suspicious we need you to call it into the police department. Don’t just post it and expect us to know or see it right away,” the chief says.
He also adds that when it comes to talking about ongoing investigations, giving the information to officials, rather than posting it online, may be the best option.
“Sharing information on Facebook could possibly hinder our investigations. We don’t put out all the information that we know about a case, publicly, because some of that stuff we need to keep it quiet not to alert the suspects that you’re on to them. If it’s being posted all over social media and the internet, sometimes that could give away some of that information that we’re trying to keep confidential,” Fontenot says.
Because the group has taken off so quickly, a meeting will take place on January 24th at 6:30 at the Liberty Center in Eunice. Different agencies in the area will be in attendance so people who are concerned about what’s going on in their community can talk to law enforcement officials.
