NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – The New Iberia City Council voted for a new liaison between the Sheriff’s department and the city Tuesday night.

The council selected former St.Mary Parish Sheriff David Naquin to serve as the contracted liaison.

“I don’t think there is going to be a tremendous change or big overhaul. But obviously there might be some things that we can both agree on that would make the citizens a little bit happier,” Naquin said.

“We’re not sure if everything is being done the way it’s supposed to be and we just want to make sure that it is by having a liaison in place for that,” said Calvin Begnaud, New Iberia City Council member.

One resident said he is concerned about how law enforcement can best protect the streets of  New Iberia.

“It’s just chaos…My car got broken into like two times in the last three months and others things happening. It’s real bad. We need to bring the city back,” resident Germaine Reed said.

The council still has to make a decision on how long they will renew the contract with the Sheriff’s Department. The council discussed only renewing the current contract for one more year.

The contract with the Sheriff’s department will expire on June 30.
