It’s been nearly 14 years since New Iberia has had its own police department. On Sunday, the newly re-established department begins patrolling the city once again. 

Chief Todd D’Albor says the department is ready to go. Over the past two weeks, the 65-member force has been completing training, getting ready for July 1 when the department officially goes online. 

“The men and women that are working for us are chomping at the bit. They’re ready to get to work,” says D’Albor. 

The chief says their department is in a unique situation. They are all in training together, he said.

“Usually someone is out working when someone is training. This is a unique opportunity because we have our department together for two weeks to do training together,” says D’Albor.

One of the city’s main goals was to develop a department involved in the community. And the city is no stranger to crime. Some residents are hoping this new department could help stop the violence. 

A goal is make sure officers are approachable, says D’Albor.

He had this message for New Iberia’s citizens: “If you see an officer in the community, flag him down. We are here to engage in our community. We are here to undo the stereotype of the police versus the community. We want to be one with the community, and that’s how we are going to lower crime and keep our community safe.”
