The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office has installed a new monitoring trailer, which records the speed and time of each vehicle that passes by.

“After the parish roads were repaired, that gave racetracks in almost every area of the parish,”
explains Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. He adds that their office kept receiving complaints of people traveling at dangerous speeds on parish roads.

News 10 spoke to some people living in those areas. Jean Marks says he and his wife have seen the results of drivers flying by their homes, “One lady with a baby stroller, she was walking the baby down the road here and got hit with a side-view mirror. We had another incident here where I was on a riding lawn mower and almost got hit in my own yard.”

The sheriff’s plan is to place the trailer on roads where speeding is often reported. Then from the information gathered, he can decide where and at what times they need “boots on the ground” for speed enforcement.

Guidroz adds that they hope to have another monitor within the next 30 days. He explains that each speed tracker costs about $8,000, but says his office has been saving money over the past two years so they could make the purchase without having to take money from other departments.
