Here are some of today’s headlines you should know before heading out the door:
- The Federal Government says human trafficking is a prevalent and serious crime in the Untied States. More than 30,000 calls were made to the national human trafficking hotline this year alone.
- The Ville Platte Police Department is investigating a scam. One resident reported a phone call that their loved one in another state was put in jail. The scammer needed $2,300.00 to be sent to them as a gift for bail money.
- Protestors gathered outside of the St. Landry Parish Courthouse yesterday in support of Dr. Drip. The former champion racehorse was neglected and abused.
- The Lafayette Parish School Board voted to stop teachers from grading 2nd-12th graders on homework assignments. While one believes this is a step backward. Board Vice President Jeremy Hidalgo says homework is important. But grading it can be detrimental to a child’s success.
- District 2 and 3 council members Jay Castille and Patrick Lewis held their Town Hall meetings Thursday night. Lewis introduced a different plan, while Castille says the current proposed plan is the best option for Lafayette Parish.
- State and local officials will hold a groundbreaking event this morning for a new $4.2 million drainage project happening in Lafayette Parish.
- The wait is finally over for thousands of residents with developmental disabilities. The Department of Health releases a new Tiered Waiver Program. Instead of serving residents on a first-come-first serve basis, they will assist those who need urgent care, first.
- Dangerous heat and humidity will stay throughout the weekend. Skies will be partly cloudy with a high in the upper 90’s. The heat index will be around 103-115°. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11am today until 8pm.
