Here are some of today’s headlines you should know before heading out the door:
- 17-year-old Jorie Walker of New Iberia has been charged with second degree murder after Monday nights fatal shooting. Police have identified the victim shooting as 20-year-old Levonne Johnson of Jeanerette. Investigators say they are still looking for a second suspect.
- A Louisiana woman was arrested and accused of killing two of her husbands. According to police, she allegedly poisoned both men with barium acetate. She has been charged with Second Degree Murder.
- Civil Rights Activist Arthur Sampson has filed a number of complaints to the U.S. Department of Justice against the Ville Platte Police Department in regards to wrongful arrests. The department previously investigated some complaints against the department in 2015.
- By a unanimous vote, Artmosphere has received a conditional use permit to operate as bar as opposed to a restaurant that sells alcohol. The owner also needed to obtain a distance waiver because her business — as bar — will be located too close to a school.
- Governor John bel Edwards’ office confirms there will be another special session before July 1st, the start of the new fiscal year. This comes as house lawmakers failed to reach a tax deal by Monday’s midnight deadline.
- Acadiana businesses were approved $3 million the last fiscal year to train employees while on the job. SLCC’s corporate college partners with LEDA to inform businesses and new employees about the number of training programs and grants availble to them.
- The recent dry weather over the past few weeks is affecting soybean farmers in Acadia Parish.
- A ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m. this morning at the Phillips Street bridge in Opelousas to celebrate its reopening. The bridge was closed back in September of 2016.
