LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — No injuries were reported after a truck fell into Coulee Ile des Cannes near the Lafayette / Vermilion Parish border, according to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO).

LPSO divers were on the scene this afternoon in an attempt to attach cables to the truck so it could be towed out of the coulee.

“Luckily, we don’t have a situation where we are recovering a fatality,” Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber told News 10.

Good Samaritans acted fast after hearing a crash and splash on Robley Drive. A Ram 1500 truck floated across one bank to the other with a driver banged up inside.

“(She) Kinda got herself out of the vehicle. A Good Samaritan from nearby acted quickly, helped, got down there,” LPSO Public Affairs Director John Mowell recounted.

Her rescuer says before she fully got out of the water and over the bank, the truck fully submerged, and the Lafayette Parish dive team performed a familiar duty.

“You wouldn’t think that a dive team would be used a lot,” Garber stated. “This is the fifth time in a month which is a little bit unusual high activity for this period.”

LPSO Public Affairs Director John Mowell says four of their dive operations were for vehicles. Flash flooding was responsible for some, but poor driving conditions were equally responsible even at low speeds.

“Those quick rainstorms like that the road is slick and oily and stuff, so you know you’ve got to be careful in those circumstances,” Mowell said.

Even in situations without loss of life, sheriff’s deputies say it’s important to act quickly when recovering a vehicle to minimize environmental damage.
