The suspect in the shooting of a Tulane medical student who was apparently coming to the aid of a crime victim is in custody, according to the police.

The NOPD and U.S. Marshals picked up 21-year-old Euric Cain around 11:30 at a home in the 2200 block of Delechaise Street.

Cain was wanted for shooting 25-year-old Peter Gold Nov. 20 near the intersection of St. Mary and Magazine streets on Nov. 20 as Gold was trying to come to the aid of a woman who was apparently being mugged by Cain. He will be charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and armed robbery.

In chilling surveillance video released of the incident, Gold comes to the rescue of a woman who was being dragged down the street by a man identified by police as Cain. After Gold intervened, the man pulls a gun on Gold and shoots him after he told the gunman didn’t have any money. Gold collapsed to the ground, and the gunman pointed his gun at his head and pulled the trigger three times. The gun jammed, and the suspect fled.

A spokesman for Tulane said Monday afternoon that Gold continues to improve and is in guarded condition.

“We’re going to find you, we’re going to prosecute you, and you’re going to spend the rest of your life behind bars,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu warned at the press conference that identified Cain as the suspect in the high-profile shooting.

Police later found Cain’s vehicle in the 2200 block of Reverend John Raphael Place in Central City.

“We know who you are and you need to know that we are going to find you. We need the public’s help to do this, but there is no question we know who he is, that he will be brought to justice, and anyone who harbors him is going to be arrested and you’re going to be convicted to the full extent of the law as well,” Landrieu said.
