One Northside High School student is facing consequences for bullying after a video of him attacking another student went viral.

The video shows the student taunting and hitting another male student. It was all filmed on Northside High School’s campus.

Lafayette Parish School System’s Chief Administrative Officer, Joe Craig, says they don’t take these cases lightly, so as soon as the school’s principal found out about the video, action was taken.

“She notified the district office so that we’d be aware of it and immediately her administrators began an investigation into the complaint based on the video,” Craig says.

That video shows a student being punched in the face not one but four different times in a matter of 37 seconds and although an investigation is still underway, disciplinary action has already been taken.

“They were able to identify the individual, the victim, and the aggressor. That student, the aggressor’s been disciplined within the guidelines of the parish policy. And because of the nature of the incident, that’s been referred to Lafayette Police Department,” says Craig.

Act 861, which was enacted in 2012, provides resources to assist Louisiana school districts to prevent and end bullying.

Craig says since it’s been established, handling these cases have been easier.

“The formal process is helped. It makes it very standardized amongst the schools and amongst the district,” Craig explains.

But he says it hasn’t all been good news in regards to bullying.

“Due to the increased availability of social media, the problem has gotten bigger,” Craig says.

Despite disciplinary action already been taken towards the student who threw the punches, he may face more consequences depending on the outcome of Lafayette Police Department’s investigation.
