LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Firefighters say a fire at a Lafayette Consolidated Government warehouse caused substantial fire and smoke damage.

The building belongs to the Parks and Recreation Department and is located in the 100 block of Shirley Picard Drive .

According to a news release, the fire was started by an improperly discarded cigarette in a trash container inside the building.

Employees reportedly left the building approximately 30-minutes before the fire was reported, authorities said.

Spokesperson Alton Trahan told News 10 no injuries were reported and the fire was completely extinguished.

The intersection of Mudd Avenue and Shirley Picard Drive was temporarily closed to through traffic as authorities investigated the fire. It has since been re-opened

The cause of the fire was ruled an accident.
