Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating an officer-involved shooting at a home on Contour Drive in Lake Charles.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus with the Lake Charles Police Department said at 1:07 a.m. Sunday police received an open phone 911 call coming from 737 Contour Drive where they could hear a disturbance in the background.

“Officers were dispatched to the residence and met by Venus Lau, the suspect’s wife. Officers were speaking with Venus in the front yard when her husband Kevin Lau was observed standing in the doorway with a pistol. Officers and Venus backed away from the residence to a point of safety when they heard a gunshot come from the home. Almost immediately after setting a perimeter, Lau exited the residence, pointed his pistol in the direction of the officers and refused to obey their directions to drop his weapon. Still pointing his gun at officers, officers shot Lau.” Kraus said.

Officers performed first-aid on Lau before he was transported to Lake Charles Memorial where he was pronounced dead.

The Louisiana State Police are conducting the investigation at the request of Lake Charles Police Chief Don Dixon.
