OPELOUSAS, La (KLFY) – A decision to move a high school football game didn’t sit well with some fans. Originally set to be played at Donald Gardner Stadium, a decision was made to move the Opelousas High and Teurlings Catholic High football game to Lafayette.

A deal between the head football coaches at both schools caused quite a bit of controversy after Opelousas High football players and their parents got wind that the senior night game wouldn’t be played on their own turf.

As we come upon week ten of high school football, this will be Opelousas Senior High’s last home game as well as senior night, however, for Teurlings, it’s a game that the rebels wanted to see played on their own turf.

“We shot out to them to see if they would be interested in moving the game to Teurlings,” said Teurlings Catholic High Principal, Michael Boyer.

Boyer says because his school’s team will have a bye the first week of the playoffs he says they wanted to make up for lost revenue.

“It’s not a problem about going to Opelousas and playing,” said Boyer. “We’re just looking out for our finances.”

Boyer says Opelousas Senior High head football coach, Dwight Collins, and Teurlings Catholic High head football coach, Sonny Charpentier, filled out an LSHAA contract agreeing that Teurlings High would pay Opelousas High $5000 to have the game played at Teurlings football field.

“We made it very attractive for Opelousas financially,” said Boyer.

Boyer says although this is a common practice, it was to their surprise Opelousas High agreed because it was their player’s senior night, however, the contract has since been destroyed after Opelousas High parents contacted the district’s superintendent.

“I spoke with Rodney Johnson, the principal, and I spoke to the new superintendent and they were both requesting that they be released from the contract which we certainly did,” explained Boyer.

After making several phone calls and even going by the school, Coach Collins told News 10 it’s a school matter and we would have to speak with the principal who could not be reached for comment.

We also reached out to the St. Landry Parish School Board for comment, but were not able to reach the superintendent or the supervisor of athletics.

The game has since been changed back to being played at Donald Gardner Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
