Opelousas man arrested, accused in theft of 3 ATVs

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY)— Deputies arrest and Opelousas man for allegedly stealing three all-terrain vehicles, authorities said.

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz said that between the months of Oct. and Nov. the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated several thefts of all-terrain vehicles.


A news release stated early this month on Nov. 5, deputies were notified by a concerned father who believed that his juvenile son received one of the stolen ATV’s on a trade.

Upon further investigation, deputies said they discovered the ATV had been reported stolen from St. Landry Parish.

Deputies said they were informed that James Lancols Jr. was the person who traded the ATV.

As the investigation into the case continued, deputies said they were provided information on another possible stolen ATV which was located at a nearby hunting club.

According to authorities, when they arrived at the club, they discovered the ATV at the club was reported stolen. Deputies were told that the same suspect from earlier in the investigation had traded the vehicle for a truck.

A news release stated that the investigation revealed that a 15 and 16-year-old had admitted to being with Lanclos when both of the traded ATVs were stolen and stated that Lanclos was in the possession of another. Detectives said they spoke with Lanclos and said he admitted to having the additional ATV at his girlfriend’s residence.

Authorities later recovered the vehicle.

James Lanclos Jr. of Opelousas was charged with theft of over $2,000, Theft of over $3,000, theft of over $4,500, four counts of contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, and three counts of criminal trespassing.

His bond was set at $16,250.
