OPELOUSAS, La (KLFY) -Opelousas Police say at least 10 vehicles and 2 businesses have been hit this week in a rash of burglaries, but authorities don’t believe the vehicle and business burglaries are connected.

“It is the summer time. We’re going to experience more burglaries,” said Opelousas Police Lt. Graig Leblanc.

Lt. Leblanc says 10 vehicle burglaries took place on Monday in the Park Vista neighborhood and on the north side of town in the area of Jerome Loop and Meredith St.

“We have suspects or persons of interest that we are trying to locate,” said Lt. Leblanc.

Lt. Leblanc says they’re looking for at least four juveniles who were captured on surveilance footage from one of the homes in Park Vista.

“We do believe that they took a vehicle from one of the residence,” said Lt. Leblanc.

Lt. Leblanc says there’s no indication that the same juveniles were involved in the north side burglaries, but says all the vehicles targeted were unlocked.

Paulita Turner has lived in the Park Vista neighborhood for over 15 years and says the area just needs more police presence.

“My car got hit twice, they had somebody break-in,” said Turner. “Just a few weeks ago my grandson bicycle was stolen.”

Lt. Leblanc says area businesses have also become a target.

Just Wednesday morning, First United Pentecostal Church and First South Farm Credit were also hit by theives.

“We don’t think that those juveniles are related to these two burglaries just because of the methods that were used and some of the items that were left behind,” said Lt. Leblanc.

Lt. Leblanc says this is the time of year when residents need to remain vigilant and remember to lock up your valuables.

“It’s very important we don’t give these kids the opportunities, easy opportunities, to commit these crimes,” said Lt. Leblanc.

If you have any information about these crimes you’re asked to call the Opelousas Police Department.
