Opelousas Police identify the shooting victim as 23-year-old Steven Andrus.  Andrus’s family  says no matter the circumstance of his death, Andrus leaves behind people who love him and determined to find who shot him.

“He was just a quiet laid back person and he would give a person the shirt off his back if he could,” cousin Paula Weston said.

Opelousas Police Chief Martin Mclendon says in the early hours of Tuesday morning, officers were notified about a shooting victim who’d been taken to the hospital.

“As a a result, he succumbed to his injuries with a single gun shot wound to the stomach area,” the chief said.

Police suspect the shooting may have occurred near Andrus’ family home on Philip street in an area known as ‘The New Projects’.

The chief says he has officers canvassing the area for information.  “It’s a difficult situation. We have family members who are grieving.  We have a community looking for answers and we’re going to get those answers,” the chief stated.

Andrus’s cousin is asking the shooting suspect to step forward and give the family peace. “Come confess come turn yourself in. This is somebody’s child.  This is somebody’s grand child.  This is somebody’s cousin. This is somebody’s nephew . The violence, stop the violence,” Weston added.

Opleousas Police say anyone providing information will remain anonymous.
