Opelousas resident seeking over $90 million in compensation from oil companies

Anthony Griffin says that he is the owner of the oil royalty rights for an active well in Bunkie.

Over the years, many oil companies have been drilling there.

Griffin says that he has not received any compensation and that has led to a number of moves legally that he has made.

“It was one of my relatives who had passed and he didn’t have any kids and he didn’t have any kids so the property went to his siblings,” says Griffin.

Griffin says oil companies signed an agreement with his relatives back in 1935.

He says the royalty rights have now been passed down to him.

Griffin says he sent a letter to ExxonMobil and the Hess Corporation to which they didn’t respond.

So in 2014, he filed a lawsuit in the federal court seeking over $90 million dollars.

“Our case was thrown out of federal court,” says Griffin.

He then appealed in the U.S. Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit but that was also thrown out.

“They never gave me the opportunity to argue my point, just like they didn’t give me an opportunity to argue my point in the federal court system,” says Griffin.

Griffin then went to the Supreme Court where his motion was denied.

This leads us to today and Griffin is now seeking reconsideration.

Griffin is representing himself in the case.

He says his motivation is clear.

“Just simply trying to get something that was wrong turned into right,” says Griffin.

KLFY reached out to both ExxonMobil and the Hess Corporation.

ExxonMobil said they were looking into the matter and we did not get a response from Hess.
