OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY)— A sex offender living in Opelousas has been arrested for allegedly violating his probation by using facebook.
According to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, on June 30, deputies arrested Al James Sonnier, 34, for unlawful use of a social networking site saying he violated his probation.
Sonnier was convicted in Texas in January 2007 for indecency with a child, contact on a juvenile, and transferred his registration to Louisiana in July of 2009.
On September 16, 2013, Sonnier was again convicted of a sex offender crime, this time in the 27th Judicial District Court. He was convicted for indecent behavior with a juvenile.
Under Texas and Louisiana statutes sex offenders are forbidden to have a social networking site such as Facebook
A news release obtained by KLFY states that deputies received an anonymous tip that Sonnier had a Facebook account and was posting recent photos of himself, his girlfriend, his minor daughter, as well as other unidentified individuals online.
Detectives say they verified that Sonnier had opened the account under the name of Al Sonnier. They then conducted a compliance check at his residence.
According to deputies, Sonnier admitted to having the account and even updating the day of the compliance check. He was arrested and processed in the parish jail.
Al James Sonnier was given a bond of $5,000 but denied bail until a hold is lifted from the probation office.
