A Dayton pastor is dead after being shot inside his church.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the pastor as William Schooler, 70, of Dayton.
It happened in the 3300 block of Nancy Avenue at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church after 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Dayton Police took the shooter out of the church in handcuffs and placed him in the back of a cruiser. Officers believe Schooler’s brother, Daniel Gregory Schooler, may have been the shooter.
He has been arrested in connection with the shooting and is currently booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Charges have not been formally pressed.
Witnesses say the shooting happened while the choir was singing. They say Rev. Schooler had just walked up to the pulpit, and the shooter followed him.
Members of the church say they started to hear gun shots. The congregation of about 20 people immediately took off running.
Dayton police were able to arrest the shooter when officers arrived.
Rev. Schooler was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is schedule for Monday, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
Rev. Schooler was a former member of the Dayton Public School Board of Education. He was also president of the Dayton Baptist Pastors and Ministers Union of Greater Dayton, Inc.
A member of the union said the Black History Worship Service scheduled for Sunday at Zion Baptist Church has been canceled in honor of Dr. William B. Schooler.
