PORT BARRE, La. (KLFY)— After two Port Barre Officers were injured during a hit and run investigation, a statement on the case the Police Chief made is now going viral.

The hit and run investigation turned into a heated confrontation between officers and residents, and the Chief said his officers’ response saved lives.

Chief Boudreaux’s statement described what he called aggressive actions of those arrested and the violent scene.

He went on to say,

“Had backup not arrived, had there been deadlier weapons laying around the yard, an officer, a husband, a father, could’ve lost his life over a hit and run complaint. A 15-year-old young man could have lost his life had it not been for the compassion and restraint by that police officer. As I watched the police officer’s body camera videos, I was proud of the police officers incredible restraint and professionalism.”

Last Saturday, two Port Barre Police Officers were injured during a hit and run investigation. When the officers attempted to speak with the owner of the vehicle, Lybeth Hardy and her 15-year-old son were noncompliant.

Several people began approaching the officers and the situation turned violent.

“The 18-year-old girl grabbed a chair, a metal folding chair, swung and hit one officer in the arm.” Said Police Chief Boudreaux, “You see the 15-year-old boy grab a fishing pole, I’ll show you, hits the officer in the head and continues to try and attack him.”

Hardy, her son, and an 18-year-old girl were all arrested. Chief Boudreaux said they are still looking for another suspect.

“Looking at the video there’s another young man, looks like around early teens, that picked up a bicycle and threw it and it actually hit one of the officers. So we are investigating to see if there’s anyone else that we can arrest.” Stated Chief Boudreaux.

Boudreaux said he didn’t expect the recognition on the statement he gave when all he said he did was tell the truth.

“You know I didn’t think this incident would get this much recognition. I just hope other agencies can learn from this. I hope other police executives, administration can learn from this and say you know what just tell the truth. That’s all you got to do is tell the truth.”

Chief Boudreaux says this is still an ongoing investigation and they will continue to look over the video.
