When you get a lot of rain in a short period of time, water can rise pretty quickly. The right preparations, however, may be able to decrease your chances of getting water in your home.

Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Heath Morton sat down with News 10’s Rebeca Marroquin to talk about the incoming weather and possible flash floods.

He says, “If you have ditches that have debris in them, like trash or anything, make sure they’re cleaned out because you don’t want to clog the ditches or the drains.”

But if you’re in a flood zone area, where even clean ditches and coulees don’t stop the water from rising, it may be a good idea to prepare your home as well.

“If you have sandbags, have those ready to go because the rain’s gonna come down in a hurry, and in a short period of time you can get flash flooding,” says Heath.

He adds, “If you don’t have sandbags it may be a good idea to go out and get some.”

While most cities and parishes only provide sandbags during emergencies, the City of Youngsville has a large sand pile available at the old horse arena on Iberia Street. It’s a self-service station; they have provided bags and a shovel for anyone who wants to be a little more prepared.
