After police departments responded to incidents like in Ferguson Missouri and Baltimore Maryland, President Barack Obama is placing a hold on military equipment being issued to local police. On Monday, President Obama put a federal restriction on all military caliber weapons to local police forces. The banned list includes:
-tank-like armored vehicles
-bayonets
-firearms and ammunition of .50 caliber or higher
-grenade launchers
-weaponized aircraft
-certain types of camouflage uniforms
The Lafayette Police Department limited their discounted buys to AR-15s, M16s, and 2 Humvees.
Corporal Paul Mouton of the Lafayette Police Department says, “In recent years, police have come against criminals that are using equipment that is actually better than the equipment we are issued on a regular basis. These programs that are set up by the government and military give us an opportunity to purchase these types of equipment at a reduced rate.”
Other departments around the country possess grenade launchers and even tanks.
“You don’t need to go to that extent and that measure to get people to stop doing what they’re doing” said Logan Murphy, an Acadiana Resident.
Jeremy Jacob of Bunkie believes it should be left up to the armed forces. “It’s something they should leave to military not local police.”
Others say the weapons should be allowed if they’re being used for riot control, under one condition.
They can have them on hand long as the the actual ammunition as in bullets are disabled; not only that they don’t have it, but they don’t even have the mechanism to fire one if they had it” said David Chalpin of Lafayette.
Although restrictions have been placed of local law enforcement buying from federal government, they are still allowed to purchase from private sellers.
