LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – A pre-trial hearing was held on Thursday for Tyler Benoit, the man who was indicted in the shooting death of a Lafayette man back in August of 2017.

Family members say Christon Chaisson tried to intervene when he saw Tyler Benoit allegedly beating up his girlfriend.
When Chaisson stepped in, Benoit allegedly shot and killed him. Chaisson died from his injuries at the hospital.

The family tells News 10 that the Assistant District Attorney told them on Thursday, that they are still in the discovery phase of the investigation, so they pushed the pre-trial back to August 23, 2018.

“We saw him (Benoit) and then he walked up, and then he left. But nothing really happened in there. There was no conversation,” said Kelley Jolivette, Chaisson’s cousin.

Decked in red shirts, with orange and blue wristbands with the words ‘Christon Strong and Heroes Never Die’ on them, the family of Christon Chaisson was at District Court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

After Benoit turned himself into authorities for Chaisson’s murder in August, he was indicted on second-degree murder charges.
But less than a day after his indictment, a judge reduced his bail from $250,000 to $150,000, and Benoit was out on bond.

“It is just so wrong at this time. This young man is under the comfort of his family, and we have to go to a grave site to actually experience any piece of Christon that’s left, and that’s just so wrong,” said Jolivette.

The family says the past couple of months have been difficult, but they will continue to demand justice for their hero, and who the community is calling a ‘Good Samaritan,’ in Christon Chaisson.

“He would want us to fight. He saw something that was going on that he wasn’t, he didn’t feel was appropriate and he stepped in. And at this point in time we don’t feel like justice has been done for this family,” said Jolivette.
