As previously reported, a Grand Coteau alderman resigned after complaints of payments sent to him even after missing over a dozen meetings.

Turns out, he isn’t the only one with complaints.

Jessica Marcel has served on the board for the past 8 years and is in her second term.

It is only now that we have received complaints about her living and working outside city limits, in Sunset.

According to the Clerk of Court, it’s not illegal and residents have had their chance to do something about it.

“It’s the first case to my knowledge that has gone on that long,” says Charles Jagneaux.

Jagneaux says the first opportunity to bring up concerns about a candidate comes when there is an election.

“There’s a chance, an opportunity to challenge their candidacy whenever they qualify,” says Jagneaux.

He says there is a five day period after qualifying where a civil suit can be filed by any registered voter of the district or town.

“They can go to the district attorney’s office and file a statement to that effect and then the district attorney takes it from that point,” says Jagneaux.

If the person is already elected and in office, there is the option of a recall.

“If there is a sufficient number of people sign the petition then they are recalled but they aren’t out of office, they just have to run again,” says Jagneaux.

KLFY spoke on the phone with Jessica Marcel who chose not to be interviewed but she did say that the complaints were very hurtful.
