LAFAYETTE PARISH, La (KLFY) – An expected soggy weekend ahead is putting a damper on several Christmas events, but in the city of Carencro organizers say the party will still go on.
“We already have majority of our inside booths set up and there are some people that are willing to bare the weather for a while,” said event organizer, Margaret Rozas.
Rozas says the weather won’t stop the show for the 19th annual Carencro Country Christmas. Preparations are already underway for the event that will take place Saturday.
“We do have a 5k run that starts at 8 a.m. and as of now it has not been cancelled,” said Rozas. “The inside events start at 9 a.m. at the Carencro Community Center. We have arts and crafts, food booths, and we have entertainers and choirs that sing throughout the day.”
However, Rozas says so far the only thing that has been cancelled is the parade that was scheduled for 2 p.m., and back in the Hub City the 13th annual Sonic Christmas Parade won’t roll this year as well.
“Unfortunately this weekend looks so bad that we just felt like that the right thing to do was to go ahead and cancel it,” said parade organizer, Gary Wilkerson.
Wilkerson says after working this entire year to put the event together he says coming to this decision was the hardest yet.
“We devote a lot of time, energy, and financial resources to make this happen, so believe me we hate cancelling the parade, but it’s also the prudent thing to do to keep everybody safe,” said Wilkerson.
Wilkerson says this is the second time they’ve had to cancel the parade because of a weather event. He says it can’t be rescheduled for several reasons.
“It’s just quite a big, big problem to try to reschedule,” said Wilkerson. “We just don’t have the ability to do that. Also, because of the availability of floats and getting approval from the police department to use the streets again.”
