RAYNE, La. (KLFY) – In this day and age where athlete safety takes center stage, one football coach finds himself in the penalty box for not adhering to the rules.
While the Rayne Wolves’ football season ended a week ago, it’s now the leader of the pack, head coach Curt Ware, who finds himself suspended for allegedly not following player safety guidelines.
Sources close to the Acadia Parish School System say Coach Ware has been suspended with pay pending results of an investigation.
Coach Ware allegedly did not follow the concussion protocol, putting players in danger.
New 10 called Coach Ware and didn’t get an answer.
We also inquired about the suspension details with the school board and received this response:
“State law prohibits us from commenting at this time on the matter you inquired about today,” Superintendent Scott Richard wrote in an email.
We spoke to a local athletic trainer, John Roy, about the proper way to handle players with concussions symptoms.
“Initially, we do what we call baseline concussion testing. It’s a neurocognitive program, meaning it’s measuring how the brain is functioning at the time- how they’re thinking, their reaction time, memory. If they do have a concussion, we start the protocol, which is when we monitor their symptoms,” said Roy. “After 48 hours, we do a post-test to see where they are at, according to their baseline scores. It gives us a good indicator on how serious the concussion is. At that point, we get them to the physician and if symptoms come back, then we have to back off on our protocol. We may start back to level one of rest.”
