Lafayette Police Corporal Paul Mouton confirmed the Grand Theatre was handed over to the owners Monday. The theatre is still closed, and police are still on the property.
The owners have asked the Lafayette Police to continue to provide security as they bring in a cleaning team for a future re-opening.
Corporal Mouton stated, “They’re still going to maintain physical security of the business as a result of hiring our officers to work in that capacity. Depending what the owners want to do, we’ll probably leave the tape up, especially in the immediate area of the building itself, until the physical security of the building is released.”
Some good news: the last victim they were treating at the Lafayette General Medical Center was released Monday afternoon. The two remaining victims, one at Our Lady of Lourdes and the other at the Regional Medical Center of Acadiana are still hospitalized, but are reported to be in fair to good condition.
On Monday, Lafayette Police said that a journal-type book was found in the shooter, John Houser’s, hotel room. The contents of the journal have not yet been released, but police confirmed that the item has been sent to a specialist to be analyzed. They are still looking into Houser’s motive for the shooting.
Update from Lafayette Police Department (6:27pm):
The Lafayette Police Department was notified that the remaining patient at Lafayette General Medical Center was released early Monday evening.
Two victims remain hospitalized, one patient at Our Lady of Lourdes and one patient at the Regional Medical Center.
Update from KLFY (4:55pm):
At 3:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon, the Lafayette Police Department turned over the Grand Theater building back to the company. Police have completed the processing of the crime scene at that location. The owners of the Grand Theater have retained the Lafayette Police Department to provide physical security for the building while crews begin the clean-up process. The Lafayette Police Department continues to follow up information as this investigation remains ongoing.
As of 4:00 pm this afternoon, three victims remain hospitalized at each of the area hospitals.
Authorities with LPD have confirmed that journal type book was found inside of Houser’s hotel room and has been turned over to specialist to be analyzed. They are not releasing any information at this time as to the content of the journal.
On Tuesday morning, Corporal Paul Mouton with LPD will be meeting with investigators and the city attorney to discuss the release of the 911 calls in this incident along with the initial report.

Police have finished processing the scene at Grand 16 Theatre where a gunman opened fire during a showing of “Trainwreck” killing two people and injuring nine more before taking his own life.
Corp. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police spokesperson, said the theater has been turned back over to the owners who have requested police presence remain on site.
The Grand 16 Theatre is owned by Southern Theaters, LLC, a New Orleans-based chain that operates three brands including Grand.

Investigators will soon turn the Grand Theatre 16 over to its owners, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Authorities tell KLFY they are conducting a final walk through, at this hour, and will then return it to the owners. The fate of the theatre will be up to its owners.
