LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) – Lafayette native, Donald “Aldox” Alexander, was well-known for his music and artistry.

Aldox passed away at the age of 65 and his wife, Cheryl Crow, tells News 10 that her late husband will be remembered as being a jack-of-all-trades who was strong in faith.

“A very humble person,” said Crow. “He never complained too much.”

Aldox died recently after a long-fought battle with cancer.

Crow says her most vivid memories will be of her husband’s ability to bring anything to life through his paintbrushes.

“He was very quiet and humble about his work,” said Crow. “Throughout the years he had done alot of different types of painting.”

His paintings can be found in many churches across Lafayette.

“He considered them his babies,” said Crow. “He had done so many he actually forgot about alot of them that he had done.”

His most prized possession were his paintings of swans, what Crow says he loved to paint most.

“He liked to paint alot of different ones,” said Crow. “He really enjoyed doing the portraits that were commissioned for him.”

Such as those paintings he did for the floats in the African American parade that recently earned him an award on behalf of the Lafayette City-Parish Council.

“He did alot of political figures,” said Crow.

Including a portrait of Rosa Parks he painted back in 1994 in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

The number of portraits painted by Aldox is unknown, but Crow says his most phenomenal works were his restoration pieces.

“After Hurricane Katrina, I know he had alot of work where he was able to restore things,” said Crow. “It actually quite honestly blew my mind some of the things that he could actually do to restore pieces.”

Crow says her husband’s work will forever live on through those he touched though his artistry.
