(Daily Advertiser)- LSU basketball coach Will Wade told recruiting middleman Christian Dawkins about a “hell of an offer” to apparently reel in a top recruit in a phone conversation that was intercepted by the FBI, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports on Thursday, March 7, 2019, afternoon.

According to the report, Wade appeared to be speaking about a third-party’s attempts to delay a commitment because “he didn’t get enough of the piece of the pie in the deal.” Wade does not mention the recruit by name, according to Yahoo! Sports, but references it as “the Smart thing.”

Javonte Smart, who was a four-star recruit, is now a freshman at LSU.

LSU is ranked No. 10 in the latest USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

An LSU spokesperson did not immediately reply to a request for comment from USA TODAY Sports on Yahoo’s report, and Wade declined to comment to local reporters Thursday afternoon.

“I haven’t read it,” Wade told reporters when asked about the report. “I don’t have any comment on that. … We’ll move forward as we need to.”

Dawkins, the man at the other end of that call, was one of the key figures at the center of an FBI probe into the underbelly of recruiting in college basketball, an investigation that also led to the arrests of former Adidas employees James Gatto and Merl Code, among others.

Code and Dawkins were each sentenced to six months in prison on Tuesday, while Gatto received a nine-month sentence.

The probe also ensnared three college assistants — one each at Arizona, Oklahoma State and USC — and there is a chance that it could lead to further punishment from the NCAA at multiple schools.

Yahoo! Sports previously reported that Wade and Arizona coach Sean Miller will be subpoenaed to testify in federal court next month.
