Rescue efforts continue in Crowley

CROWLEY, La. (KLFY)— Rescue efforts continue in Crowley.

Officials waded through water floodwaters for medical emergencies, as the water from the Mermentau River continues to rise and into nearby homes.

“They had a lot of water damage for sure. Maybe three inches to a foot of water in their house. Some of the houses when I first went in had half their house under water. “ said John Haycook, a resident from Crowley.

Salvation Army workers were out all day Tuesday on boats rescuing individuals who were trapped in their flooded homes. Handing out on Tuesday, 33 cases of water and distributing 44 rescue kits.

Fay Porpier, a Salvation Army worker told KLFY, “When I see them smiling and hugging you that’s when you know you’re doing the most good. That’s what we try to do.”

Though not all residents wanted to evacuate out of their homes, some just sticking it out, something Haycook said he could relate too.

“I don’t know, I was like that myself during Katrina. I didn’t want to come out of my house too. They had to rescue me.”

Rescuing others is all in a day’s work for the Salvation Army, Porpier said, the workers are trying to do their best to help everyone, “We might miss one or two but we’re going to catch ten or twenty. We try not to miss nobody.”

The organization said they’ll be in Crowley as long as the water continues to rise.
