The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating eight vehicle burglaries that happened in Maurice in the span of one day.
The areas where car owners were victimized are all in the same general area in La Premiere Subdivision, Wilson Road, Placide Road, Kennel Road, and Sage McKenzie Road.
The crimes occurred late Sunday into early Monday morning.
One resident who was burglarized, says, “I didn’t like that feeling knowing that somebody could do that in my area. I thought I was in a safe place.”
Caught on camera… this surveillance video is from one resident who was burglarized. She was too afraid to even give her name out of security concerns.
“I woke up around seven, and decided to check it. I don’t usually check it, but I don’t know, something told me to check it and I did.”
Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon says burglaries increase during the holiday season.
“We experience a lot of burglaries during holiday seasons and when school lets out,” adds Sheriff Couvillon.
Sheriff Couvillon gives this advice to residents in order to decrease future burglaries.
“We encourage all residents to lock their vehicles and don’t leave valuables in plain view,” explains Sheriff Couvillon.
As for this Maurice resident, she’s just happy she and her family are safe.
“I mean they’re wrong. It’s Christmas time. People are working hard for their money, and they’re just out there trying to steal from other people and it’s not right.”
Sheriff Couvillon adds if you are going out of town, you are welcome to call the Sheriff’s Office and ask for extra patrol down your street.
Sheriff Couvillon says they have a person in interest related to these burglaries and as of this morning, detectives are interviewing him.
