In just three short months the New Iberia sheriff’s department say they have already investigated three murder cases.
Residents, law enforcement, and community leaders say they are fed up.
“Earlier there was an attitude that these things are happening in specific hotspots in New Iberia, but now these things are really impacting the whole city,” says local pastor Rev. Zack Mitchell.
He says there are still good people in the city who want to see positive change in the community.
“We’ve seen since the beginning of the year, I guess starting in February, we’ve seen a lot of concerned people that have made a decision. We’re not gonna take this anymore so they are rising up to do what they can do,” says Rev. Mitchell.
Rev. Mitchell and others have gone door to door since January trying to provide anything they can to those in need.
He says, “Many people are asking well you guys are on the ground, and praying and everything, and shootings are still happening. Well our goal wasn’t to stop the shootings. Our goal is to change our city, and so that is the critical part and the only way were going to do that is to really get the hearts of the city changed.”
He says they will continue to move throughout several districts in New Iberia trying to help wherever they can.
“I have not one time been in boots on the ground where we’ve had people without tears, or are just ecstatic that somebody is out there trying to do something about it and trying to see for their fellow citizens and care for them. And I just think that that is critical,” says Rev. Mitchell.
