GUEYDAN, La. (KLFY) – Officials are expecting Tropical Storm Cindy to make landfall early Thursday morning.
Vermilion Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is asking residents in low lying areas to voluntarily evacuate Wednesday and Thursday. They suggest going to a relative’s home away from the area until the storm passes.
In Gueydan Wednesday night, residents only saw mild winds and light rainfall.
Vermilion Parish Residents have been busy preparing, but they said they aren’t worrying yet.
“This moment I’m not. In the past we’ve had stepped way worse than this,” Nicole Mouton said, Gueydan resident.
“This is normal I mean we get 50 mile an hour winds during like the thunderstorms and everything,” Cameron Clement said, Vermilion Parish resident.
Many residents headed to the store Wednesday night, stocking up on storm necessities just in case conditions worsen.
“We’ve had a lot of people coming in buying batteries, flashlights, candles, the main necessities,” Mouton said.
“I would be more concerned by the people living next to ponds, lakes, and gullies because if it floods that’s all in their house and it’s really tragic once it gets in,” Clement said.
Vermilion Parish is under a coastal advisory and a tropical storm warning.
Vermilion Parish schools are closed Thursday as well.
