Some Shreveport residents have had to leave their homes as water crept into their homes. The Red River is rising as floodwaters drain from Oklahoma and Texas.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office says water has been confirmed in four houses, one of them vacant, and in a church. The Northwest Louisiana Red Cross has opened a shelter at Southern University-Shreveport.

The Times reports that power was cut off to a block in Shreveport’s Allendale neighborhood.

Resident Tiffany Mills says water went up more than a foot in the 24 hours between Tuesday, when she left, and Wednesday morning.

City Councilman Willie Bradford says he doesn’t know what the city could have done to avoid the flooding. He says it will look for ways to prevent future floods there.
