Maps showing the proposed new city and parish council districts have been released, identifying the possible separation of Lafayette city and parish councils.

News 10 spoke to community members about what they think of the possible change.

The people we spoke to tell us they’re supportive of the possible split, saying the current council has too much on their plate having to balance both Lafayette city and the parish.

Lafayette Parish resident, Glen Clark tells me he’s lived outside the city limits for just under 10 years and says he’s yet to see much work done by the council when it comes to the parish, “We have drainage problems, we have road problems. They just don’t address it. It’s all about the city of Lafayette, so I think we need to separate them… Just keep them on their own. I mean, I think the parish is the parish and the city is the city.”

He adds that if neighboring cities have their own councils, the city of Lafayette should too, “Youngsville, Broussard, and Scott all have city councils, why not the city of Lafayette? And that way they can have their own representation and the parish can regain their voice again.”

In order for this proposal to become a reality, it will have to be approved by the council for introduction during the July 10th meeting then again for adoption July 24th. Finally, it would have to be approved by voters on December 8th.
