LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Thursday bicyclists made their way around the Hub City in honor of Mickey Shunick.

Shunick was tragically killed on May 19, 2012.

Since then several acts have been done to promote bike safety.

One those includes a resolution passed by the Lafayette City-Parish Council that established a memorial bike route around the city in Shunick’s name.

Thursday marks the one year anniversary of that resolution.

Forward Lafayette Member Mark Declouet said the memorial ride couldn’t have come at a better time.

“We rallied a petition together and we have about 24 hundred signatures of citizens in the area that want this bike loop to be here, specifically the West Bayou Parkway portion and it just so happened that it fall on the one-year completion of the bike loop so it’s somewhat serendipitous.”

Thursday at 5:45 p.m. bikers biked that route in honor of Shunick.

Local cyclists Jordan Kellman said Mickey Shunick was a devoted biker and would be proud to see so many supporting bike friendliness in Lafayette.

“She’s somebody who used her bike to get everywhere Lafayette, so this is a great way to celebrate her legacy and do something that she really would have been happy about.”
