The sales tax proposition that’s before voters has no term limit. The mayor says if approved, the tax will generate about $2.4 million per year.”
Mayor Jan-Scott Richard says its all up to the voters now.
The people will make the final decision. “That’s what we feel like everyone should have the opportunity to go and voice their opinion in regards to it. If they’re in favor of they’ll vote yes and if they are not they’ll vote no; and we’ll live within our means and move on like we had been.”
Auditor Burton Kolder agrees with the mayor, saying the city of scott does have about a one million dollar surplus. The mayor says what the proposition is asking for is not much more than other municipalities have in terms of a tax rate. “All these municipalities, their tax rates are above ours. Currently we’re just looking to get where they are.”
Mayor Richard says 66% of that one percent will go to police and fire emergency services and 33.33% for infrastructure, drainage, parks and recreation and economic development. “It’s not going to be used for raises or anything of that nature. That’s going to come out of our general fund. Everything else is going to be specific to capital projects; whether it’s an overlay, a road expansion, sewer rehab or sewer projects,” Richard said.
The mayor says there hasn’t been a tax imposed in the City of Scott since 1984.
