BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) – A Senate bill at the State’s Legislature would allow for more prayer in school if it becomes law.
Senate Bill 512 filed by Ryan Gatti, a Republican from Bossier City, would allow teachers and school employees to pray with students during the school day.
Present law already allows for students to participate in those events, as long as they’re organized by the student.
The teacher or staffer could only participate in the prayer, if the event happens before or after their work schedule.
Under this proposal, teachers and staff could pray with the students during their workday when requested by a student, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their duties.
Also, a parent or guardian would have to submit a signed request for the employee’s participation to the school principal.
The bill has made it out of committee, and the Senate, and will now head to the House for consideration.
We’ve reached out to Louisiana Senator Ryan Gatti for comment.
