NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)–  Sheriff Ackal is charged with one count of conspiracy against rights and two counts of deprecation of rights under the color of the law.

Now for the first time since his indictment, Sheriff’s Ackal speaks out the case.

“What they have, cannot be substantiated. It’s bull as far as I’m concerned. I’m very disgusted and aggravated that this is continuing and continuing. There still running grand jury which is costing the taxpayers quite a bit of money. But, let’s see if they can come up with anything else.”

Ackal’s Trial was supposed to begin next Monday. He says the U.S. Attorney has decided to postpone the case until sometime next year.

As the investigation into the sheriff and his department continues, the sheriff says “he’s very ready to fight.”

In March, a federal grand jury indicted Ackal and Savoy on allegations of inmate abuse.

Both men pleaded ‘not guilty’ to civil rights violations in the 2011 beatings of five pre-trial inmates at the parish jail.

Nine deputies have already pleaded guilty in the case for their roles in the beatings.
