LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal faces more charges in the inmate beating scandal at the parish Jail.

In the latest indictment, the government says Ackal conspired to assault an inmate who allegedly assaulted one of Ackal’s relatives.

According to the superseding indictment, Sheriff Louis Ackal conspired with others in March of 2014 to assault a man known as R.T. who allegedly assaulted one of Ackal’s relatives.

After finding R.T., a parish narcotics agent allegedly kneed the man several times and hit him with his baton.

During R.T.’s first week in jail, Ackal and LT. Colonel Gerald Savoy allegedly asked staff to bring R.T. to the jail’s administrative area.

The indictment says Savoy grabbed R.T, twisted his arm behind his back and said,

“I out to break your (Expletive) arm like you did (Ackal’s Relative).”

Ackal then allegedly yelled at R.T.,

“You want to (Expletive) with my family?”

Ackal has been charged with conspiracy against rights.

Ackal’s attorney, Lewis Unglesby says, Ackal has no plans to resign his position and tells News 10,

“Sheriff Ackal looks forward to his day in court, he’s been an exemplary law enforcement officer for the people of Iberia Parish and expects to continue to serve the people of Iberia Parish.”

The superseding indictment also charges savoy and former captain Mark Frederick with deprivation of rights for allegedly assaulting a pretrial detainee with a baton in the jail chapel in September 2011.

Ackal and Savoy had previously been charged related to beatings of five pre-trial detainees at the jail in April 2011.

Deputies allegedly beat detainees with batons in the chapel because there weren’t any cameras there.

Ackal and Savoy pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Last week, Sheriff Ackal told News 10’s Dalfred Jones he’ll fight the charges against him.

“What they have cannot be substantiated. It’s bull as far as I’m concerned. I’m very disgusted and aggravated that this is continuing and continuing. There still running grand jury which is costing the taxpayers quite a bit of money. But, let’s see if they can come up with anything else.”

Nine former Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office employees have already entered guilty pleas for their roles in the beating scandal.

If convicted, Ackal, Savoy, and Frederick face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
