ABBEVILLE, La (KLFY) – James Harber, a 7th grade teacher at J.H. Williams Middle School in Abbeville, remains behind bars with his bond set at $4,350,000.
Harber now faces 58 counts of child pornography. He was arrested on the new charges after investigators say child porn images were found on one of his electronic devices.
Harber was initially charged with one count of first degree rape and two counts of second degree rape of three minors left in his care by a woman he had a relationship with.
“I’m shocked that this happened,” said Curnel Cessac, who lives down the street from Harber’s home.
Police were initially tipped off by the Vermilion Parish School Board. Harber was immediately placed on administrative leave.
“We don’t have information as of yet which would imply him doing any of these terrible acts on school grounds,” said Vermilion Parish Sheriff, Mike Couvillon.
It’s unknown where the children attended school, but police say the incident happened at Harber’s home.
“My detective that’s working this case advised me that in all of her years working she’s never seen something so horrible,” said Sheriff Couvillon.
Sheriff Couvillon said the victims have been placed in the custody of child protective services.
Since the investigation, the mother of the children, Angela Head, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the case. Police tell us Head left the children in Harber’s care on occasion.
She faces one count of indecent behavior with a juvenile and three counts of child pornography.
Her arrest was based on evidence gathered from one of Harber’s electronic devices.
Curnel Cessac lives just down the street from Harber’s home and says the pair were quiet neighbors who kept to themselves.
“The only time I would see them is when I sit on my porch and they would come from grocery shopping or something. They would get out the car and go in the house,” said Cessac.
Sheriff Couvillon says the investigation is far from over and more charges could be forthcoming.
