LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – One person was killed in a shooting at Bourgeois Park near the UL campus.
“There were several individuals in the park playing basketball,” said UL Police Lt. Billy Abrams. “Some sort of disagreement occurred. That’s what lead to the shooting.”
Authorities identified the victim as 23-year old John Mitchell Sinegal Jr. He died at a local hospital from the injuries.
Authorities say he was not a student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
The following emergency text alert was sent to UL parents, students, and staff about the shooting at 3:02 a.m. Friday: “U L Police is responding to a shooting at Bourgeois Park on Coliseum Blvd. Please avoid the area.”
Abrams says the Emergency Notification System (ENS) is a useful tool to spread the word.
“It’s a tool, not only the police, but the entire university uses, to get information out quickly,” said Abrams.
UL Police are trying to figure out who shot Sinegal.
“There’s a lot of pieces we’re trying to put together at this point. We don’t have a lot of information on what exactly happened, who all was involved, how many people were at the scene. That’s information we just don’t have at this point,” said Abrams.
UL Police are conducting the investigation.
