Three weeks ago 41 year old Jenny Rebecca Stafford of Singer was arrested for negligent homicide following the fire related death of her 11 year old son.
Officials say their camper caught fire around 1 a.m. on October 25.
The camper was missing one item that could have made a difference: A smoke detector.
“Unfortunately there was not a smoke alarm so this child did not know he was in danger.”
Brady Stafford’s mother was feet away inside the house under the influence of illegal narcotics, State Fire Officials say.
“We did arrest the mom, Jenny Rebecca Stafford, she was unfortunately under illegal narcotics at the time of the fire.”
In an effort to prevent fire related fatalities, the American Red Cross goes door to door to install new fire alarms.
“”It’s extremely important to have working smoke alarms in your house. You only have about two minutes to escape your home fire.”
This year alone more than 50 people have died during a house fire here in Louisiana.
“We have had 60 fires and with that 65 deaths just this year.”
However with a working smoke alarm these numbers can be lowered.
“Having that smoke detector actually gives you a 50% chance of surviving.”
