LCG is considering changing the height of parking meters in the city of Lafayette. 

A member of a disabilities committee has taken issue with people being able to access them.

The Mayor President’s awareness committee on citizens with disabilities is zeroing in on parking meters and accessibility for a person with a disability.

Two weeks ago the commiittee met at the Rosa Parks Transportation Center in Lafayette.

The committee highlighted concerns about parking meters being too high for a person in a wheelchair.

They can put the money in, but are unable to see the screen to know how much time they’re paying for.

“We really want Lafayete to be the most inclusive we can be for all of our citizens.”

LCG”S Chief Communications Officer Cydra Wingerter says lowering the polls on the meters is being explored as an option. 

“They look at the height of the polls with the recommendation of the committee can lower those polls that the meters are on and reducing those, transporation is already looking into that.” 

Other options include waving meter fees for persons who are disabled or turning the meters to face the street to avoid the sidewalks.  

The Director of Transporation noted street-side meter usage could be a safety concern.

“The committee brings forth the exact perspective that we are looking for them to bring to the administration and the council.” 

“I think they should help them.  I think so. I think that would be a good idea you know.” 

Kim Bernard of Scott says he sees where the meters could be a problem.

“I got a disability with me too. I do have a hard time because of my back. They should be lower, that’s pretty high you know.”

LCG says no timeilie for shortening the meters has been set, but again its an option being considered.
