On Wednesday, a St. Landry Parish Council member suddenly resigned after a complaint was filed questioning her residency.
Fekisha Miller-Mathews will no longer be the voice of district 3. She announced her resignation after a complaint questioning her residency.
Parish President Bill Fontenot says Miller-Mathews has always abided by the law.
“As I understand it, she was legally domiciled in her district. I am confident she had it right and would survive this effort. She just decided she had enough.”
Miller-Mathews has been an active servant in the community for more than 20 years. Fontenot says she’s faced accusations like this before.
“This is not the first time she has been intimidated into resigning. It was an unnecessary casualty that was brought on, in my opinion, by outside forces that are intimidating, ugly and vindictive.”
The Parish President added that it is okay to own a home outside the parish limits.
“If you look in the record of laws in this area and around the state, you can have more than one residence. As long as your domicile is within the district or area that you are required to serve.”
District three resident Alton Broussard served as a police juror with Miller’s father, he says he hates to see her go.
“She was a fine council person and I was shocked when she resigned. She did a good job as the council person.”
Broussard says whoever replaces Miller-Mathews has large shoes to fill.
The next person that takes her place, I’d like to be Fekisha like. I like to see a person that will work with the people because you represent the people.”
Fontenot says the council has fifteen days to appoint a new member.
