A drug bust in St. Landry Parish over the weekend sees another arrest in an increasing amount this year.
Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says the latest drug bust in the parish uncovered almost nine pounds of high grade marijuana.
The marijuana was valued at nearly $50,000 dollars worth.
While the busts increase, there is one constant the sheriff’s office is seeing more of.
“Crystal meth has risen it’s ugly head here in St. Landry Parish and we have a whole lot of crystal meth, problems, addiction, issues,” says Guidroz.
Guidroz says painkillers are also near the top of the list, and in recent cases, even heroin.
Guidroz says in a small parish like St. Landry, these drugs fall into a certain category called ‘surface narcotics.’
The Sheriff’s Office uses many checkpoints in their vehicles to try to sniff out possible drug scenarios.
They also use evolving tactics that Guidroz says he could not share with KLFY.
“We have to do different things because the mules, the people calling the narcotics into the parish learn our operation and how we conduct our business,” says Guidroz.
Guidroz says the parish narcotics team is short-handed and that many of the drug busts originate from their tips hotline.
The hotline phone number is (337) 948-8477.
