Memorial Day may have been on Monday, but the honoring of veterans has not stopped.

A project to add to the St. Landry Parish Veteran’s Memorial broke ground on Friday.

Pat Mason-Guillory is the project chairman for the memorial.

She says the project has been nearly two years in the making.

It entails adding two walls for plaques in honor of fallen military members.

“7 foot wide so give us enough space to walk around and we’re trying to accommodate handicap facilities as well. This is just a sample of one of the 12 by 12 squares that’s going to be on the proud military family wall,” says Mason-Guillory.

The new walls will hold a special place in Mason-Gulliory’s heart as the memorial in place already does.

“This is my husband, he served in the Navy…my son served on Desert Storm…Operation Desert Storm,” says Mason-Guillory as she shows off the plaques.

When it comes to availability of the two sides, the front end of the memorial is actually all booked up but there are still spaces available on the back end but Mason does say they are going fast.

“3/4ths of this wall is filled to capacity so anyone interested in getting a square for the east side of the wall, you need to contact me as soon as possible,” says Mason-Guillory.

Mason-Gulliory says the plaques come on a first come, first serve basis.

“If you want to show off your family and have something that’s everlasting,” says Mason-Guillory.
