HENDERSON, La. (KLFY) The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office says residents got a break when it comes to homes being damaged —- beyond water just seeping into doorways.

St. Martin Parish resident, Douglas Landry and his wife say they’re grateful. “When we came in we knew watching this right here just about that board got up to there. It went down then we said we’re safe,” adds Landry.

Landry says he just kept an eye on things as the rainfall continued. He lives dead directly between the Teche River and Vermilion River. “Now, we are scared about that Vermilion River because it’s high right now,” says Landry. The parish made sandbags available to residents – we’re told over 800 sandbags were handed out Sunday. The Police Chief in Breaux Bridge says what helped was opening up the drains for the water to recede before it got too high.

The St. Martin Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is in the midst of assessing storm damage stemming from the weekend weather. Officials are asking that anyone who sustained wind, hail or water damage at their home or business to notice them (337) 394-2837.
